Yin Health - bursting with vitality

Below is a summary of precautions that particularly apply to the yoga at Yin Health.

This is not an exhaustive list, as every woman is unique, so please listen to your body and adapt your practice accordingly.  Your Yin Health yoga teacher and your health care professional are always here for guidance and support.

General

- If you are pregnant or have serious health concerns such as joint injury, recent surgery, epilepsy, diabetes, or any cardiovascular diseases (especially high blood pressure), be sure to discuss your intention to practice yoga with your General Practitioner (GP) or Specialist.

- The guidance given at Yin Health should be used as a supplement if you are already under the care of a health care professional for a specific medical condition(s).

- For Yin Yoga, do not eat anything for at least one to two hours before class. And no big meals at least three hours before class. Give yourself time to digest before your practice.

- Don’t wear perfume when you practice. Deep breathing is part of the practice and you do not want to be deeply inhaling these fumes.

- Avoid practice if you have had a lot of sun that day. Prolonged sunbathing depletes the body – let it recover before stressing it further.

- Wear loose, comfortable clothing, so that the body is not restricted.

- In Yin Yoga, you will not generate much heat internally. Feel free to wear extra layers of clothes, especially during the cooler months of the year.  Blankets are also provided.

If you are pregnant:

The above ‘General’ precautions apply in addition to:

- Do not exercise strenuously if you have a history of miscarriages or cervical insufficiency.

- In the first trimester of pregnancy, many women experience fatigue, nausea and dizziness. Pre-natal yoga may assist to alleviate such symptoms. However, always obtain the permission of your General Practitioner or Obstetrician about the suitability of any pre-natal exercise.

If you recently had a baby:

The above ‘General’ precautions apply in addition to:

- A hernia or rupture caused by the separation of the rectus muscles of the abdomen can occur during pregnancy or birth.  If you notice a small bulge in the abdomen, do not attempt abdominal strengthening poses and inform your teacher and General Practitioner or Obstetrician.

- As a new mother, your energy levels can fluctuate greatly from day to day. Be kind to yourself and listen to your needs.
