Restorative Meditation Yoga

Is almost like a mini vacation. Rejuvenating practice that assists achieving peaceful deep relaxation by stretching the muscles, lowering the heart rate, blood pressure and calms the nervous system. Benefits for all, particularly to reduce stress.

Ideal for those who have had any physical injuries, restorative yoga focuses on relaxing the body in restful postures. Note that ‘rest’ is different than sleep. Rest provides the body an opportunity to renew and heal. Countless studies have proven the physical and emotional benefits of this, including maintaining mobility and strength.Restorative yoga, including Yin yoga, helps to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Stimulating the PNS helps to lower heart rate, blood pressure; it helps to healthily stimulate the immune system and keep the endocrine system operating healthily. It is believed that is the PNS is tapped out or under-active, illness pervades. At Yin Health, yoga practice incorporates the use of a lot of props such as blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, chairs, sandbags and walls. All props are provided at the centre and can be purchased for home practice. The more your body is supported in poses the deeper the sense of relaxation. With props it is easier for the body to get into certain poses, and thus, surrender to the pose.
Restorative yoga postures can be practiced at any time of the day. Ideally, one would start their day with yin poses and breath work. It is a great way to wake up the body and clear the mind before launching into the day. It is also beneficial to practice restorative postures at the end of the day, before bed. This can slow the body and mind down, and prepare the body for sleep. Many who practice restorative postures (at any time of the day), find that they sleep better and their energy levels are higher.

Pregnancy Yoga

  • Ideal for pregnant women or women trying to conceive.
  • Recover your vitality and promote a healthy, happy pregnancy.
  • Pre-natal Yoga is a gentle and effective way to physically, mentally and emotionally prepare for labour and birth.
  • At Yin Health, yoga postures are adapted by an experienced teacher, according to the woman’s trimester stage.

Performing Yin Yoga poses with awareness creates a state of peace. When a pregnant woman feels inner clarity, her sense of empowerment increases. When she feels calm, any anxiety concerning the birth process decreases. Her mind becomes involved with the body movements of herself and the baby. This focus allows the pregnant woman to tune out distracting forces around her during labour and to respond appropriately to the contractions.

As a woman becomes more aware of her body through practicing yoga, she may be confronted with her physical strengths and weaknesses. This is actually invaluable training, for labour is a very physical process. Knowing the areas of tightness or weakness and working on those areas, will help a woman prepare her body for birth.

Whilst this approach offers no guarantee for an easier or quicker birth, the increase in body awareness and enhanced ability to breathe and relax will help any woman adjust to the physical demands of labour, birth and motherhood.
All props are provided including blankets, pillows, chairs, blocks, straps and mats. However, if you own a special prop that makes you feel more comfortable, please bring it along to your practice.

Post-Natal Yoga

  • Benefiting the health of both mother, father and baby during such a special time.
  • Post-natal Yoga is a very effective and gentle way to get back into shape after birth.
  • Post-natal asanas (postures) emphasise abdominal strengthening of the muscles that were overstretched during pregnancy.
  • Twists are focused on to help shrink the uterus.
  • Relaxation asanas are of added importance to lessen fatigue and aid in the recovery from childbirth.

At Yin Health, we understand that many women find it challenging to have time to exercise after their baby is born. Consequently, at our classes, we provide two options:
a) Post-natal classes – where you practice without your baby (Creche Available at the centre); and/or
b) Mums n Bubs/ Dads n Bubs classes – your baby is welcome to be with you during your practice. Bring any special blankets or toys that your baby loves if required. You can also choose to practice without your baby during this class (Creche Available at centre).

Doing yoga postures with your baby will help you get back in shape while enjoying the company of your new little one. It is not necessary to do the poses with your baby but it can be a very pleasant experience.
We also understand that taking time for a daily period of reflection and relaxation on your own can be an invaluable aid adjusting to the demands of new motherhood.

At Yin Health, we believe that it is important to not be in a hurry to flatten your abdomen by beginning strenuous exercises right after childbirth. Regaining your original muscle tone takes time and it is important to proceed cautiously. A woman may begin particular yoga asanas six weeks after a Caesarean birth. Three weeks wait is sufficient after a vaginal birth. However, please obtain your Doctor or Obstetrician’s consent before beginning any exercise program.
