Our lead Child Health Nurse is Jan Murray. Jan's interest in babies started at 11 years old when she encountered a "real live baby" for the first time!
Jan started her career as a Registered Nurse then studied to become a Midwife shortly afterwards.
During the 80's and 90's Jan gained practical early childhood experience as her husband and herself raised their own five children. Parenting young babies however, was not as easy as she had first thought, therefore, she furthered her professional education by studying and gaining a certificate in Family and Child Health Nursing in 1998. This area of work then became Jan's passion and focus.
As Jan has experienced the maze of parenthood she now supports other parents with the valued information that she has gained and continues to gain both personally and professionally.
Jan's love of babies and young children as well as a practical but educated knowledge base has helped her create a service that will put at ease parent's stress and indecision.

Having a baby can be such an amazing and empowering experience. It is an incredibly life changing event. It brings with it personal transformation, changes to your body, to relationships, and deeps shifts in attitudes. It can also bring all kinds of emotions to the surface – feelings of immense joy and excitement, but also confronting feelings of fear and worry about what lies ahead and your ability to face the challenges of birth and parenting.
In our culture today we have very little exposure to real birth stories, so we are often sent into the big unknown when we get pregnant. Having the support of a doula and having meaningful preparation with an educator not attached to any institutions can be very helpful and comforting at this time. We were never meant to do this on our own! Apart from this, having someone to talk to if you have had a difficult experience before can be immensely valuable to help you move forward and regain confidence before entering labour and birth again.
Pernille Powell runs childbirth preparation classes based on the philosophy of ‘Birthing From Within’, both as weekend workshops and privately in your own home. She offers Doula Service support through your pregnancy, labour/birth and early parenting and she also offers caring and nurturing Birth Story healing for women, who had difficult, disappointing or traumatic experiences.
Pernille Powell has 6 years of experience on the Sunshine Coast both in all the hospitals and at homebirths. She has also been running the popular BaBs pregnancy and parenting community support group for the last 5 years, and through her contacts with hundreds of birthing women has developed a unique understanding for the many issues of birth.
Her qualifications are: Certified Advanced Doula and Childbirth Educator, ‘Making Space’ a baby’s journey with Jenny Blyth, ‘Birthing From Within’ Mentor and Birth Story Medicine.
